Burcat quoted on PA’s Methane Reduction Efforts in Law 360
Joel Burcat, partner and chair of Saul Ewing’s Energy Extraction Practice, is quoted in this article in Law 360 on Pennsylvania’s strategy to curb methane gas emissions from natural gas production. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas and the Wolf administration in Pennsylvania has a plan to reduce methane gas emissions from natural gas drilling and pipeline operations in the Commonwealth beyond levels mandated by the U.S. EPA. The article notes that with a new administration in Washington, it is likely that EPA’s methane gas reduction regulations will be reevaluated and possibly revised. This will require the Wolf administration in Pennsylvania to decide whether it will go along with the EPA’s regulations or go beyond the federal mandates to impose more stringent Pennsylvania mandates.
“As of Friday, it’s going to be a whole new ballgame. You’ll have a new administration, evaluating new regulatory programs that were proposed by the current administration,” Joel was quoted in the article several days prior to the Presidential inauguration. “In a state like Pennsylvania, there’s going to be an effort to take positions that the administration believes it must take despite or in addition to what’s going on at the EPA.”
